I photographed five high school graduations this season for various newspapers, and I noticed some recurring themes. I’ll let you dive into the slideshow for most of them, but I’ll highlight a few.
For one, the rise of the hipster has trickled down to the school-age youth. Cheap sunglasses and pseudo-vintage sneakers dominate.
Condom balloons surreptitiously tossed skyward during the issuing of diplomas are still popular. Some things are just timeless.
Over-the-top mortarboard decorations pompously advertising that you got into the college of your choice are all the rage. Whatever the specific trend, kids will always find a way to let you know they don’t care if you think they’re an asshole, even if they really are.
Anyway, for all you high schoolers whose image-conscious psyches provide so much subject matter for my lens, congratulations class of ’09!
