The last few weeks have seen me doing quite a few environmental portraits, and I can’t help but get excited when a shoot comes together.
I’ve noticed a few people complaining about the cold here in San Diego – it was a frigid 57 degrees yesterday after all. But, I’m sure people elsewhere in the country are more than a bit jealous of our weather.
I had the pleasure of shooting among some of my favorite fishes at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps in La Jolla a couple weeks ago. The Ocean Discovery Institute (formerly Aquatic Adventures) hosted a gala and featured some talented kids informing guests on various environmental issues.
I photographed five high school graduations this season for various newspapers, and I noticed some recurring themes.
I’m pleased to announce I took home two awards and an honorable mention at the 2009 San Diego County Fair Photojournalism Exhibition. “Freegans” won second place in the photo essay category, and “PBR Rodeo” won third place in the same category. “High Tide at Scripps Beach,” seen above, received an honorable mention in the Documentary category.
I’ve headed downtown to the San Diego Velodrome the last several Tuesdays. The weekly races make for a great evening – one of my favorite (and free) pastimes. Last weekend I was on assignment covering cowboys and Indians at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, but this weekend found me soaking in western culture at the Lakeside Rodeo just for the pure entertainment. I brought my camera of course. Photography just happens to be how I enjoy myself as well as pay the rent.
Ah, La Jolla, “the Jewel” as they call it, one of my favorite places in San Diego to people-watch when I really don’t want to expend too much energy. I can always fall into place behind some slow-moving grandma or married couple and let the pace of the crowds on the sidewalk slow down my usual frantic wandering.
This bird at the San Diego Zoo the other weekend kept me entertained for several minutes with its futile attempts to win over a female of the wrong species with its mating ritual – a high-pitched croak accompanied by a quick head bob.

I covered a youth flag football tournament recently, and besides being creeped out by the absurd number of Yes on 8 signs posted in front of the Christian academy hosting the teams, the hot sun was putting the pressure on me to get the shots I needed and leave.
After three hours of distilling the drama [...]
