Pets belonging to homeless residents of Sacramento, Calif. receive treatment during a free veterinary clinic held at Loaves and Fishes on Aug. 13, 2011. Veterinary students from the University of California, Davis, hold the clinic once a month.

On the way to grad school a while back I stopped in Davis, California, where I spent a day photographing the pets of Sacramento’s homeless population at the Mercer Veterinary Clinic. The clinic is held monthly and offers free services by veterinary students at the University of California, Davis.

Editing these photos, I kept having a mental slip where I wanted to say these are photos of homeless pets. But really they have found very loving owners who, despite being homeless themselves, care enough about their four-legged companions to make sure they stay healthy.

My time in San Diego continues to shrink, with just a few more weeks of summer before I head to grad school. There are a lot of people I’m going to miss, and a lot of little things as well.

I scratched “visit my family” off my to-do list this week. Up in Bakersfield, my parents were keeping busy with some yard work.

My dad, cowboy singer J Parson, had a to-do list of his own, which he shared recently in one of his entertaining promotional emails:

Build new Corral
Scrape horse pens
Work up Arena
Paint Barn
Dig Pond
Fix Fence
Write new Songs
Sell millions of records Worldwide

I didn’t see him do any of these things while I was home, but he did climb a tree. I’ll take it.

Thumbing my virtual finger through my archive today I came across a photo of Chicano Park in San Diego’s Barrio Logan. I took this back in February after traveling across the bridge from well-to-do Coronado. The neighborhoods on each side of Coronado Bridge are very clearly two different worlds. I’ll have to show the other side to compare.

The annual naked drunken footrace is this weekend, so here is a selection of photos from the 2008 event. Just weeks shy of college graduation, I traveled up north from San Diego with some friends, and it was my first time in San Francisco. It set the bar high for subsequent visits.

CAUTION: Photos #5 and #10 in the slideshow depict partial (waist to socks) male nudity. It wouldn’t be Bay to Breakers without it.

Brown pelicans fly by the site of the Grom-o-rama surf competition in Solana Beach, CA, August 23, 2008.

San Diego’s peregrinating pelicans (and their bird bombs) have been in the news lately due to their ever higher numbers. And today I came across a photo I took a few years ago during a lull in a surfing contest I was covering, when several pelicans flew by. Only in the frozen moment did I see that one of their wings had just barely graced the rolling tide.
