The entrance to the Kimberly Mine near Carbondale, Ohio, used to be flooded until a mitigation project in 2012 reduced the water level. Like many mines in the area, Kimberly was closed by the 1920s. All mining that occurred prior to the implementation of 1977 Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act is referred to as pre-law mining — there were no requirements that mine owners reclaim mines to mitigate the effects of acid mine drainage.
