Canada Geese swim in a 3 acre pond created as part of a remediation project at Rock Run in Perry County, Ohio. The site was formerly stagnant due to piles of old mine waste and soils, which trapped rainfall and prevented it from flowing as a stream. The project also created vernal pools, a prairie meadow, and drainage to enhance a wetland below the pond. It promoted wildlife habitat recovery through the planting of native species. In April, 2012, it was the site of the planting of 750 hybrid American Chestnut trees in a joint effort by the American Chestnut Foundation and the USDA Forest Service to help the species recover from a widespread blight introduced in the early 1900s.
